I recently attended my first Institute of Physics business accelerator breakfast meeting.  The focus of this particular meeting was social media and how to use it for your business.  Having started my own business this year I thought it would be a good idea to go along and see how I could better use social media.  It was also a great opportunity to get some continued learning in, which can be very difficult to do when you work in a highly specialised area.

The session was run by Charlotte Ashley-Roberts from Your Time To Grow and was a super useful hour.  We covered the benefits of using social media, identifying which platforms are suitable for your needs, who to target and how to stand out in a crowded market.  I liked that I came away with a set of actions that could be easily put into practice and that I am confident would work.  One of those actions was to start writing blog posts just like this one!  The people who attended were from a variety of jobs and really engaged with the session, so the group really worked well together.  I got a lot of good ideas, outside of the topic area of social media from the group, which was a great unexpected bonus from the session.

The business accelerator breakfast meetings are held at the stunning new IOP building in Kings Cross.  If you haven’t been to visit yet, make sure you go on your next trip to London. The building is beautifully designed and there is physics all over it!  I discover a new bit each time I visit.  If you don’t have time to make it any further than reception then make sure you check out the cloud chamber coffee table there.  The building is open to everyone, not just members, and they have a gallery space in the basement which houses touring exhibitions so it’s always worth a look.  If you are a member of the IOP there is also an excellent members room where you can work in peace if you are stuck in London at any point.  It is furnished with comfy chairs, computers, books, magazines and a Nespresso machine.  It is a perfect office away from the office.  Although, don’t despair if you are not a member and stuck in London, there are lovely work spaces in the building where you can work, or just sit in peace.

So, if you fancy coming along to the next breakfast meeting then they are held on the last Friday of every month.  Each one covers a different topic and  you don’t even need to be a member of the IOP to attend.  You can book online http://accelerator2019.iopconfs.org/Home.  I’ll be there, so come and say hello.  If that is not enough of an incentive to get you there, then the IOP will also give you breakfast and a set of post it notes!
